Card Making Top Tips and Tutorials

Getting Started

What you will need

1. Score Board

There are lots of different ones available, some are just for scoring card sizes, but some have score lines for making boxes on the back, my favourite one is from Crafters Companion.

2. Paper Trimmer or Guilotine

If you want straight lines you really will want one of these, there are loads on the market, a Rotary one is the easiest to use, Tip when choosing one, make sure you can read the measurements easily as some of them as not very clear.

3. Scissors

Pay a few euros for one as the cheaper ones will blunt easily when using them to cut card, X-cut have great ones or fiskers

Tip dont use your paper scissors to cut foam tape or double sided tape keep the cheap one for this.

4.Glue

The best one I have found is Collall, if this glue spills you can wipe most of it away it a cloth and then allow it to slightly dry and rub the excess away with a clean finger. also Bostic multi purpose (purple tube)

5. Doublesided Tape

Pay a bit more for this, sometimes at craft shows you see 6 rolls for €5.00 this tape really isn't worth buying as it wont tear, and sometimes doesn't stick very well.

6.Foam Pads for Decoupage.

Again pay a bit more for these, as the cheaper ones dont come off the backing paper easy and wont come away singly, also can be very hard to remove the top backing paper, Avec are about €1.00 a sheet of 400 and are the best ones I have found

7.Card

For card making choose card that is 250gram weight or above for matting and layering, 150gram and above I get mine from

 Papermill.co.uk

and also

payperbox.co.uk

8.Embellishments

You will need a good range of these and once you get started will have boxes full of them

9.Decoupage

This is my favourite type of card making as you will never be stuck for an image, I have closed my shop down but have bumper packs of 50 mixed occasions A4 Sheets for €20.00 just email me if you want more details

saving you €30.00 s they are normally €1.00 per sheet

Matting and layering

These are the pieces of backing card or paper we use to make a topper. You will hear and see this therm a lot in card making

Decided want Embellishment you want to put on your card look at the size of it, if it’s 6cm long by 4cm wide your matting and layering cards should be no more the 2/3cm bigger, other wise the embellishment will be lost on the layer. You can choose to have 2 or 3 layers for your topper.

Embellishment 6cm long 4cm wide

First layer of topper would then be 8cm by 6cm

Follower by the second layer 9cm by 7cm and so on.

                  C6 Card

Simply stick the larger of the two layers to the top centre of your C5 or C6 card with glue or double sided tape, and then stick the smaller one central on top, your card is now ready to add decoupage or an embellishments.

For Backing papers

The papers are normally A4 which is 30 centimetres across

If wrapping your card with paper, turn the sheet landscape and cut the sheet in 3 giving you

3 x 10 centimetres strips.

You will need about 8 centimetres for the front of you card leaving you 2 centimetres to wrap around the back, finish off with a peel off strip.

Getting Colour combinations right

When matting and layering your layers to make a topper for your card, my advice is to look closely at the colour of the embellishment or decoupage you want to use, pick up the colours in the embellishment (example in picture) I have used a lilac and white bouquet, so the colours in my topper are lavender, Blue and white with a touch of silver in the writing,

Using the colour wheel above you will see that varying shades of the one colour work best, but contrasting the colour with the opposite colour work equally as well.

My favourite opposite colours are Orange and Navy. Silver and Gold. Or Purple and Lime Green

Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour combinations

Inserts for C5 card

Well this is how I do mine, so here it goes.

1. Open new page on Microsoft word,

2.Change page layout to landscape

3. Add 2 columns, you will then have to move spacer bars to 1cm at both sides.

This will give you 2 even spaced columns. And will make the insert centralised

4. Now to add a picture

Go to goggle click on images, and choose an image i.e. if you are doing a wedding card look for wedding bells/wedding flowers/wedding rings.

When the little box appears with the image in it, click on See full size image “which is next to the image in red”, when the image has opened larger, copy image and paste to your left column, centralise the image and drop down to centre of sheet,

Now drop down until you jump over to the right column. And type your poem or greeting, choose a colour ink to match the image, choose your font size and font you like, centralise the greeting and drop down to centre of sheet, and print

See picture below

Your page will be slightly to big to fit inside your card so fold in half and trim 3 mm from sides and 3mm from either top or bottom of the insert, use a corner or a boarder punch to add some pretty detail.

Hope this helps anyone struggling with there inserts Yvonne
